Taiyuan, Shanxi Province – Authorities in Shanxi Province, North China, are investigating a disturbing case of Shanxi corpse trafficking, where over 4,000 corpses were illegally stolen and used to produce bone implant products. This scandal has caused widespread public outrage and involves 75 suspects across multiple regions in China.
The Taiyuan People’s Procuratorate confirmed the investigation is ongoing. Beijing-based lawyer Yi Shenghua brought the case to public attention by exposing the details online. This revelation quickly went viral, drawing intense scrutiny and condemnation.
Case Details Emerge
From January 2015 to July 2023, Shanxi Osteorad Biomaterial Co., a company that produces allograft bone implants, allegedly sourced human corpses and body parts illegally. Shanxi Osteorad Biomaterial Co. obtained these bodies from regions like Sichuan Province, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, and Shandong Province.The company used them as raw materials for their products.
Gruesome Practices Behind the Shanxi Corpse Trafficking
The investigation revealed shocking practices. Su, a co-owner of Shanxi Osteorad Biomaterial Co., gained control of cremation facilities at four funeral homes. He did this through contracts and acquiring shares. Su directed personnel at these facilities to steal corpses. The bodies were then dismembered at the cremation sites or at the company’s premises.
Su confessed that his company received over 4,000 corpses through these illegal operations.
Legal Proceedings and Public Outrage
The case is currently under review by the Taiyuan People’s Procuratorate. It involves 75 suspects from various entities, including companies, hospitals, and funeral homes. All suspects have reportedly confessed to the crimes.
China’s Criminal Law strictly prohibits the trading of corpses. The law imposes penalties, including imprisonment of up to three years, for acts like stealing, desecrating, or intentionally damaging corpses, remains, or ashes.
