The recent triumphs of Chinese athletes at the Paris 2024 Olympics have ignited a wave of enthusiasm for sports among the younger generation, driving a noticeable increase in participation and investment in various sports activities across China.
The standout performances by Chinese Gen-Z athletes, marked by their unique style and relaxed demeanor, have captivated public attention and inspired many to engage in sports. Experts believe this surge in interest is also motivating families to invest more in their children’s sporting endeavors.
China’s Zheng Qinwen’s victory in the women’s tennis singles has particularly fueled the burgeoning “tennis economy,” with tennis training course sales more than doubling in July. Data from Meituan reveals a dramatic 172 percent year-on-year increase in group purchase orders for tennis, alongside a 90 percent rise in badminton orders. Searches for rock-climbing gyms and archery gyms have surged by 62 percent and 40 percent, respectively, while swimming pool searches increased by 30 percent.
The enthusiasm extends to niche sports such as BMX freestyle cycling and fencing, reflecting a shift in exercise habits and consumption trends among sports enthusiasts in China. The success of Chinese athletes is seen as a catalyst for this trend, according to He Wenyi, deputy director of the National Sports Industry Research Base at Peking University.
He Wenyi noted that the success of China’s Olympic champions is encouraging families to invest more in their children’s sports activities. This investment aims to nurture young talent and enhance their overall development, a process supported by families, schools, and government initiatives.
However, He emphasized that the growth of the competitive sports industry relies not only on the achievements of young athletes but also on the support structures provided by families and schools. A broader pool of candidates and effective promotion of competitive sports are crucial for talent development and the sustainability of this positive trend.
The increased support from various sectors, driven by the success of Olympic champions, is creating a lasting impact on the popularization of sports activities, fostering a cycle of talent development and widespread engagement in sports.
